About

Renato D’Agostin was born in 1983.
He started his career in photography in Venice, Italy in 2001. The atmosphere of city life nourished his curiosity to capture life situations with the camera. For this, in 2002, he journeys through the capitals of Western Europe. Back to Italy he joins the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia in Milan, and works with the production studio Maison Sabbatini.

In 2005, he attends the International Center of Photography in New York for courses in Fine Print. Soon after, he becomes assistant to Ralph Gibson.

In 2007, he presented Metropolis at the Leica Gallery in New York, followed by major galleries in The United States and Europe, represented by Charles Zalber’s Photo 4, Paris. In Metropolis, the notions of time and space become transfigured, freeing surreal and oneiric images related to the emotional depths of our collective unconscious, a space D’Agostin is able to investigate with intimate subtlety.

In 2009, he presents Tokyo Untitled, with afterwords by Eikoh Hosoe and Ralph Gibson. The book and exhibition were presented at Galerie Photo 4 (Paris), Leica Ginza Salon (Tokyo), Leica Gallery (New York), and FORMA International Center of Photography (Milan). In Tokyo Untitled D’Agostin isolates himself in the geometries of the city. He narrates his journey through his experience of the street, describing with the language of abstract images. Dislocating subjects from their realities, he depicts his perception of the space around him, the relationship between the architecture and people. This is emphasized in Tokyo where he has no reference or connection with the external world, which brings him to a discovery of the unseen.
